SKO Survival Guide

Podcast Guest Interview on

 30 Minutes to President's Club

Executive Summary

Armand Farrokh and Mark Kosoglow had me back on 30 Minutes to President's Club to share three key takeaways on great SKOs. First: pick an SKO theme you can actually return to all year, not just a hotel city. At Canada, we built ours around "Forte" -- being loud, being bold -- and reinforced it with a drummer at dinner and flamenco dancers stomping through a team-building night. People forget the training slides. They remember the flamenco dancers, and if the theme is doing its job, they remember why you had them there.

Second: make it personal. Before every kickoff, I ask my managers for a quick rundown on their people -- who had a baby, who hit something big -- and I build it into a photo flip book I study on the plane so I can walk up and actually know someone's story. Name badges get color-coded by role with the first name in huge letters, so I can spot someone across a ballroom and go make that connection instead of faking it.

Third: run the agenda like a spreadsheet, because every minute of an SKO can cost thousands of dollars in lost selling time. We run it Oscars-style -- a countdown timer at the foot of the stage, flashing red at thirty seconds, and when it hits zero, I'm walking out to shuffle you off, CEO or not. Success isn't the hotel. It's whether people fly home with a clear enough mission to actually carry it into the field on Monday.
