Data-Driven Sales & Revenue Insights
A coversation on
Executive Summary
Guy Rubin opened our conversation on Revenue Insights with a number that's hard to argue with: his team had just analyzed $54 billion in revenue across 4.2 million opportunities and a million hours of recorded sales calls, all in service of one question — what actually separates top performers from everyone else. My answer starts with something almost embarrassingly simple: the good reps have stopped sending generic outreach. I get emails every day that say "Hi JD, I see you're the CRO of Canata, you should look at my product." The ones that work say something like "I saw you went to the University of Illinois — wasn't that a great basketball game," and then connect that to a real problem I actually have.
We spent a lot of time on what I call a joint engagement plan, which is really a rebrand of the old "close plan" with the ownership flipped — instead of documenting what I'm going to do to you as a buyer, it's a shared roadmap we build together, deciding upfront what steps get us to a decision and who needs to be involved. It's a small language shift that changes the whole posture of the deal.
On the operational side, I talked about why the best predictor of future performance is past performance — most of my annual planning starts with a hard look at deal cycles, win rates, and historical turnover before I ever touch a growth number a board wants. And with call recordings now feeding straight into AI analysis, I can see across two hundred sellers exactly which MEDPICC components keep getting missed, which turns coaching from a hunch into a targeted fix.
