Executive Summary

A few years ago I stepped into a company that everyone assumed had a sales problem. Win rates were healthy — 33 to 35 percent, which is genuinely strong — so I started digging into the funnel instead, and found marketing was handing sales a 22 percent MQL-to-SQL conversion rate, with 80 percent of those leads getting rejected on sight. It wasn't a sales problem. It was an ICP problem, and I walked through that story with Rachel Beyer on the GTM Science podcast, along with the broader discipline of building an annual plan that holds up under private equity's clock.

Missing your goal is bad. Missing your forecast is death. That's what I told Rachel — not because commitments never slip, but because a leader who can explain why the number moved, and what's being done about it, keeps their seat. I walked her through how I break revenue into new logo, renewal, and expansion targets, how sales velocity (opportunities times win rate times deal size, divided by cycle length) shows you exactly where a business is leaking, and why I always build 15 to 20 percent of buffer into my own plan before it ever reaches the board.

None of it works without a weekly cadence — a flash report that tells the whole team what we expected, what actually happened, and what we're doing about the gap. It's okay to tell people it's raining outside. What people need from a leader is an honest read on how much longer the umbrella has to stay up.
